Dental Cleaning Q & A

What Happens During a Teeth Cleaning?

During a teeth cleaning, Dr. Donia will focus on removing plaque and tartar build-up to reduce the risk of gum disease and tooth decay. Children receive sealants on their molars to help prevent cavities during cleanings. Additionally, Dr. Donia and his staff may take X-rays and perform a gum tissue evaluation to check for additional mouth problems such as hard-to-see cavities or the development of gum disease.

Typically, Dr. Donia also checks biting, swallowing and chewing patterns to ensure you have no other issue with your oral health. If you have fillings or dentures, Dr. Donia polishes and cleans them as well.

He also focuses on educating patients on the proper way to brush, floss and provide recommendations as to diet.

Why Are Dental Cleanings Necessary?

A dental cleaning provides an opportunity for the dentist to remove plaque and tartar build-up from your teeth as well as to perform an overall oral check for gum disease and other oral health issues. If left unchecked, these issues can cause tooth loss, in addition, harmful diseases, such as dementia, diabetes complications, and heart disease.

During gum disease and tooth infections, your immune system becomes stressed as it tries to fight them off, which causes problems throughout the body. In the mouth, infections can cause numerous symptoms, including swollen and painful gums, loose teeth and bleeding.

How Often Is a Dental Cleaning Needed?

It is recommended for most patients to have a full dental cleaning every six months. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, receiving a thorough teeth cleaning twice a year can drastically improve your oral health.

However, patients with gum disease or a history of tooth decay are urged to schedule a visit to our office every three months so Dr. Donia can ensure the disease is not progressing.
